Lola Jeans: Sustainable Denim Done Right

We believe in celebrating and learning from brands that are leaders in sustainable business. Our brand partner Lola Jeans makes denim, a traditionally dirty business, clean and sustainable, while also planting a tree for every order! In addition to planting a verified tree for every order, they have shown their commitment to sustainability through their manufacturing methods, washing process, and eco-friendly mailers.

Did you know that using the conventional process to create one pair of jeans contaminates approximately 8,000 liters of water, which is equivalent to the amount of water one person would drink over 13 years? Our partner Lola Jeans rethought this process to create great denim but essentially no wastewater or harmful chemicals.

Their High Rise Wide Leg Milan Jeans, seen in the photo below in the color Luster, are made of 98% Cotton and 2% Spandex, for the perfect stretch. Let’s go through the manufacturing methods and washing process that make this pair of jeans so sustainable!

They have a certified EIM (Environmental Impact Measurement) Score, which measures environmental impact in four different categories: water and energy needs, chemical impact, and worker impact.

In order to create the Milan Jeans, they first need to use a bleaching process to de-size the fabric and remove any residue before it can be weaved. Most bleaching methods require many rinses, producing a lot of wastewater. Lola Jeans uses ozone technology to create a powerful bleaching agent from oxygen. This alternative process works quickly and requires fewer rinses, creating much less wastewater. Any remaining ozone is converted into oxygen and released back into the atmosphere.

Lola Jeans is proud to say that their sustainable denim line wastes no water. Any water they do use is filtered and reused in their everyday laundry and toilets.

For that final touch, Lola Jeans uses laser finishing to directly transfer their designer’s sketch onto their jeans. Other brands use a manual process with toxic chemicals like bleach and potassium permanganate. Opting for new laser finishing technology both reduces environmental impacts and ensures worker safety.

And finally, Lola Jeans cares about the mailers they’re using to send their sustainable jeans to customers. They use mailing bags made with 100% recycled content, 50% post-consumer content. They can also be used for returns, customers just need to peel off the 2nd sticker to re-seal the package and send the goods back to them.

Lola Jeans envisions a future without dirty denim. They offer other businesses the opportunity to sell sustainable denim by purchasing their products wholesale on their B2B platform. They are committed to providing women with thoughtfully-designed, affordable styles that are built to last, and they want their denim to be available to as many women as possible. Check out their shopping experience for wholesale partners, or we would be happy to introduce you to the Lola Jeans team!
